Scholarly Mates is a chess magazine for kids age 6-13, published six times per year by Mooserider Productions in pdf format, available online for viewing or download. New issues are posted each January, March, May, July, September, November. Editor Jeff Coakley and illustrator Antoine Duff have worked together for thirty years, on the Winning Chess For Kids books, Scholar’s Mate magazine, and The Puzzling Side of Chess. They bring the same style of chess content and artwork to Scholarly Mates, along with most of their favourite cartoon characters. The Canadian magazine Scholar’s Mate ceased publication in 2020. Scholarly Mates has many of the same features, while aiming at a wider audience. Similar material can be found in the Winning Chess For Kids books. Unless stated otherwise, all text and chess content in the magazine is by Jeff Coakley.
